selective suffering | A Poem

Silhouette of a woman in a hat, holding a basket against a sunset. Text reads: Selective Suffering, A Poem, @bairklos. Cave frame.

selective suffering

to be haunted or to be hollow

which poison to choose?

the pain of presence or the pain of

absence

which suffering do I

desire most?

i can’t tell if this warmth is sustaining me or

burning me

to have you or

lose you

i know naught of which

it will have to be

this dying on my tongue, a

language i’m no longer fluent in but

still know how to read

how terrible it is…

to become spring means accepting

the risk of winter

how can we learn to

forgive ourselves?

for the things we did not

become, but had to

become, and perhaps will never

become

i guess

no matter the road taken,

it will be glorious

it will be unbearable

for every road is lonely,

yet every road is holy

the only error is not walking forth

Concluding Thoughts

I have several poems that have been sitting in my notes app for months now, even though I've been wanting to share them. So, for those of you subscribed to the blog, you've probably been getting inundated with emails over the last day or two with updates that I've posted… Sorry for the spam, lol. The reason I haven't posted any of these poems is because I was concerned that the person who I wrote these poems about would read them, but honestly, I just don't care anymore. I'm allowed to share and post my art to my personal blog. And if you-know-who is reading this… Hi, I guess?

This poem in particular was buried deep within another poem that was written more like an emotional brain dump. I think I deleted about 90% of the poem, reduced it down to this, and while it sucked to kill some of my darlings, I think the piece is all the stronger for it.

Happy writing~
