HOW DOES IT WORK...?
THE MAPMAKING PROCESS
STEP 1
CHOOSE YOUR PACKAGE
After choosing your package and agreeing to the terms & conditions, please contact me to place your order.
Maps take several weeks to complete and I am usually booked out several months.
It's important to book far in advance of your publication date to be sure the map is ready in time.
Once you've paid 50% of the total price, your commission will be booked and mapmaking can begin.
STEP 2
SUBMIT ROUGH SKETCH
To begin work, I will need the following:
1.) A rough sketch of your world, no matter how messy, is the most important resource I will use
2.) A written description of any elements not clear on the sketch, incl. climate info and architectural styles
3.) If intended for a novel: print specifications incl. trim, bleed, and gutter measurements.
STEP 3
YOUR FIRST DRAFT
I'll send you a first sketch for your feedback and approval, then move on to the next draft. Throughout the illustration process, I will supply you with updates and questions, so that you have ample opportunity to request changes. When the final piece is approved, you will be charged the remainder of your fee, and I will deliver the final map to you.
MAP CONSULTATION
$40
I offer map consultation services for anyone who has created a world that they would like critiqued. I will evaluate the plausibility of your geography, climate, coastlines, and other physical qualities, as well as the aesthetic elements of your world. Included in this evaluation is a written critique (1-2 pages). Use the contact form to book your consultation!
PACKAGES & PRICING
*Prices apply to individuals requesting illustration services.
Corporations, publishers, or other business entities may be given custom quotes upon request.
I take only a small number of map commissions each year; it is HIGHLY recommended that you book as early as possible to be sure you get a slot. Depending on the number of commissions ahead of you, turnaround time can vary from a few weeks to several months. Contact me for an estimated turnaround time for your project.
Ready To Get Started?
FAQ's
HOW QUICKLY DO YOU COMPLETE COMMISSIONS? This depends on my current workload and the complexity of the map, and can vary from two weeks to three months or more. When we provide you with a quote for your project, we will also include a timeframe in which we will be able to complete it. For certain situations, we may be able to achieve a shorter turnaround, and are happy to discuss this possibility with you.
WHEN CAN I EXPECT THE READY FILES? I will provide you with the first draft in 10-14 business days, which is the fastest turnaround compared to other companies
CAN YOU PROVIDE PRINTS OF MY COMMISSIONED MAP? Currently, we do not offer printing services for maps. However, our maps will be print-quality, and upon request we can provide you with a list of printer recommendations.
DO YOU OFFER A 100% REFUND? Sure, I can provide a 100% money-back guarantee if you are not satisfied with the first draft.
WHAT MEDIUM ARE YOUR MAPS? Our maps are made digitally, but are drawn by hand. We do not use map generators or web-based mapping programs. Every map is unique, hand-illustrated, and created specially for you and your needs.
ARE THERE ANY ADDITIONAL FEES? Yes, I take additional fees for editing more than 2 images ($5 per image), creation of charts and graphs ($15 per one), and decorative elements ($25). Also, we take an extra fee if your manuscript contains more than 10 images.
WHAT IF I NEED CHANGES MADE TO A MAP AFTER IT'S FINISHED? Throughout the design process, we will be in touch with concept art and works-in-progress for you to check over and approve, so hopefully we will catch any changes that need to be made before the commission is completed. However, we know late changes can happen, so no worries! For a small fee (contingent on the size and scope of the revision), we can revise past commissions.
CAN I SEE MORE EXAMPLES OF YOUR WORK? Of course! Just see above for more examples of formatting interiors I've done.
DO I GET THE COPYRIGHT FOR THE MAP? Exceptional cases outstanding, as with most other types of illustration work, we retain the copyright of all our maps and confer to you upon delivery commercial rights to the piece. This means you, the client, will be able to use the piece as an illustration in your novel without royalties, or to give away free prints to your readers. We do NOT deliver original, layered PSD files of our maps except by special request, at an additional fee. Copyright, resale rights, and layered files may be sold at an additional fee--view our terms and conditions for more information.
